Michael V. Cibella focuses in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation. Prior to establishing the Law Offices of Michael V. Cibella, LLC, Mr. Cibella served the people of Brooklyn, New York, for approximately five years as a Senior Prosecutor in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted and successfully brought to trial numerous cases such as such as assault, narcotics crimes, driving while intoxicated, domestic violence, sex crimes, weapons possession, armed robbery and conspiracy. He also obtained hundreds of Grand Jury indictments, negotiated countless plea agreements, engaged in extensive motion practice, and investigated and served as co-trial counsel in multiple homicide prosecutions, including prosecutions for capital murder.

After moving on from the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Cibella continued to concentrate in litigation and worked at two top New York City civil practice litigation firms. During this time, he handled cases at both the trial and appellate levels, in a wide variety of matters, including personal injury, medical malpractice and construction accident cases, as well as contractual disputes and other complex commercial litigation cases in both state and federal courts.

Then, after honing his skills on both the criminal and civil sides of the law, Mr. Cibella founded the Law Offices of Michael V. Cibella, LLC, located in the heart of New York City across from Grand Central Terminal. In addition to specializing in criminal and civil litigation, Mr. Cibella works as Of Counsel to a premier personal injury law firm, Smiley & Smiley, LLP, which, since 1968, has specialized in medical malpractice and wrongful death litigation. Mr. Cibella also works regularly with the New York City Police Department on investigations of alleged police misconduct.

Mr. Cibella received his Juris Doctorate degree from Brooklyn Law School, a school renown for producing many of New York’s finest trial attorneys. During law school, he was a member of the school’s Moot Court Honor Society and successfully served as Captain of the Co-Champion Trial Advocacy team for the Northeast Region of the United States, and represented the Region in a National Trial Advocacy Competition in Houston, Texas.

While attending law school, Mr. Cibella also argued appeals before the First and Second Departments of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, worked at the Kings County District Attorney's Office in the Homicide Bureau, and served as a law clerk to a trial judge in New York State Supreme Court. At graduation, Mr. Cibella was honored by Brooklyn Law School with an award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy. In addition, Mr. Cibella has been honored by the American College of Trial Lawyers with a Medal for Excellence in Trial Advocacy. Prior to law school, Mr. Cibella received his Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Albany.

Mr. Cibella is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey, and the bars of the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He also remains actively involved in various legal organizations, including the New York State Trial Lawyers’ Association, Kings County Criminal Bar Association, New York County Bar Association, Bar Association of the City of New York, New York State Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Columbian Lawyers' Association.
